About Us
What is the Information Management Portal? The Information Management (IM) Portal is a single point of access to resources related to information management for use in the Government of Canada.
Who is the Information Management Portal for?
The IM Portal is for IM specialists (including records managers, librarians, archivists, IM analysts, Web content specialists and others), to assist them to effectively perform their work and learn from others. It supports managers who need to be aware of IM policies, guidance, trends and best practices in order to make informed decisions.
What will you find in the IM Portal?
The IM Portal contains links to many hundreds of Canadian and international resources – more links are continually being added. In Phase 2, IM Portal services will be provided including personalization and collaborative tools.
What’s excluded from the IM Portal?
The IM Portal is not a vehicle to promote for-profit Web sites. The relatively few links to private sector sites have been included because they point to specific information which could be useful to the IM Portal audience.
Who manages the IM Portal? The Portal is a joint venture of the Treasury Board Secretariat, Library and Archives Canada and Public Works and Government Services Canada. The IM Portal Management Team is led by the Information Management Division, Treasury Board Secretariat in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. An Editorial Board, consisting of representatives from various Government of Canada departments and agencies, is being created as a permanent body to guide the future development of IM Portal structure and content.
How does the IM Portal work?
The Portal is essentially a large collection of links to other web sites. Each link has been assigned to one or more categories (eg. "IM Community and Events", "IM Practice", "Learning and Development" etc.) and sub-categories ("Jobs", "Libraries", "Policies", "Publishing", etc.). This category/sub-category structure is also called a "taxonomy". Users can browse the taxonomy to find information. Each link is also described with additional metadata: title, the name of the organization responsible for the information, the URL of the site where the information is located, subject headings and keywords. Users can also search the additional metadata to find information.
The database that manages the metadata was developed by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.
